Google recently started letting news publishers show paid articles to their own, logged-in subscribers in the search results and in Discover. That sounds like a niche thing for publishers, and right now it is. But the signal underneath touches every brand: your own audience becomes a findability asset.
Let us explain what Google does, and then translate it into what you can do with it.

What Google actually does
The feature is called Subscription Linking and sits in Google’s Reader Revenue Manager. A paying reader links their subscription with the publisher to their Google account. From that moment, that reader gets their paid content shown with priority in Google Search, Discover and other Google products. In short: Google builds a bridge between the direct relationship a brand has with its audience and the places where that audience searches.
Why this is bigger than news publishers
On its own this is a publisher feature. But it fits a movement you see everywhere: platforms reward brands that have their own, direct relationship with their audience. A logged-in user, a subscriber, a loyal customer, those signals matter more and more for what someone gets to see. Your own audience is no longer just something for your email marketing, it becomes a factor in your findability.
What this means for your brand
As a webshop or brand you don’t have to turn on Subscription Linking, that really is for publishers. But the strategic lesson applies broadly:
- Build an audience you own yourself: accounts, email, a community, loyalty. Not rented attention on a platform that changes the rules tomorrow.
- Make that relationship recognisable and structured, so search engines and AI can connect your content to your brand and your audience.
- Don’t see owned media as a separate channel, but as part of your findability.
That’s exactly why we’ve been saying for a while: stop renting your findability. The more direct your relationship with your audience, the less dependent you are on the whims of an algorithm. And the easier it is for a search engine to recognise you as the authority you are.
Owned media is no longer a separate channel. It becomes part of whether you get found.

Subscription Linking is a small feature for a specific group today. But the direction is clear: the brands that build a real, owned bond with their audience will stand stronger, including in the search results. Start now, not when it’s already commonplace.
